Your Personality Type and Your Money Habits

The CQ Team · 6 min read · Jun 18, 2026

Your bank account is a personality test. Here's how different types tend to spend, save and stress about money, and what to do about it.

There's a strong link between personality type and money habits. How you spend, save and worry about money isn't random, it traces back to how you're wired.

Spenders vs savers, by wiring

People high in Openness and Extraversion often spend on experiences and novelty, the trip, the concert, the round of drinks. People high in Conscientiousness tend to plan, track and save. Neither is "right," but each has a failure mode: one forgets the future, the other forgets to live.

The emotional spenders

For some, money is tangled with feelings. Stress, boredom or celebration open the wallet. If your spending spikes with your mood, the fix isn't willpower, it's spotting the trigger and meeting the real need another way.

The avoiders

Others cope by not looking. The banking app goes unopened, statements unread. Avoidance feels safe but compounds quietly. If that's you, the move is small and structural: automate the good decisions so you don't have to face the numbers to make progress.

Work with your wiring, not against it

The best money system is the one you'll actually follow. Automate around your weak spot instead of fighting it with discipline.
