The idea of four temperaments goes back to ancient Greek medicine. David Keirsey's version, from Please Understand Me (1978), names them Guardian, Artisan, Idealist and Rational, and links each to four of the sixteen Myers-Briggs types. It is a different system from the older sanguine, choleric, melancholic and phlegmatic temperaments, which this test does not measure.
