INTJs and INTPs share three letters but lead with different mental processes. How to tell them apart, with a quick self-check.
They lead with different mental processes. An INTJ starts from a long-range vision and organises the world to reach it. An INTP starts from an internal model of how things work and keeps questioning it until it holds.
In Myers-Briggs theory, each type uses four mental processes in a fixed order of preference. INTJs and INTPs use a different process in every position. The Myers & Briggs Foundation lists the order and leaves the direction of the third process open.
INTJ
Introverted intuition: leads: where things are heading
Extraverted thinking: supports: plans and systems
Feeling: third
Extraverted sensing: least developed
INTP
Introverted thinking: leads: a model that must hold
Extraverted intuition: supports: possibilities
Sensing: third
Extraverted feeling: least developed
Same three letters, different reflex.
| Situation | INTJ | INTP |
|---|---|---|
| Deadlines | Sets a target and works back from it. | Does the real thinking early and the visible work late, because the model had to be right first. |
| Decisions | Comfortable deciding with incomplete information if the direction is clear. | Would rather leave a question open than close it on a reason that doesn't hold. |
| Conversation | Ask about a project and you hear the plan. | Ask about a project and you hear three ways it might be wrong, plus a fourth idea. |
Type theory says fatigue and stress push people into their least developed process, which psychologist Naomi Quenk called being “in the grip”. The two types have different weak spots, so they come apart in different ways.
The weak spot is extraverted sensing, the physical here and now. Theory predicts a stressed INTJ gets caught up in sensory detail they would normally ignore.
The weak spot is extraverted feeling, other people's reactions. Theory predicts a stressed INTP becomes unusually caught up in what others think of them.
INTPs are a little more common than INTJs in both of the publisher's US samples, and both types are more common among men.
| INTJ, 2018 | 3.1% |
| INTP, 2018 | 4.5% |
| INTJ, women | 2.2% |
| INTP, women | 3.6% |
| INTJ, men | 4.0% |
| INTP, men | 5.4% |
| INTJ, older | 2.1% |
| INTP, older | 3.3% |
For each situation, pick the reaction that fits you better, then count. More in the middle column points to INTJ, more in the right column to INTP.
| Situation | More like INTJ | More like INTP |
|---|---|---|
| A plan is agreed | Relief: now you can execute | Unease: you spot a flaw nobody discussed |
| You learn a new field | Where is it useful? | How does it fit together? |
| Someone's argument is weak | You steer back to the goal | You take the argument apart |
| Your inbox | Sorted by a system | Sorted by whatever you thought about last |
| A free weekend | A project with an end point | A rabbit hole with no end point |
INTJ, slightly. In the publisher's US data, INTJs were 2.1% (older figures) and 3.1% (2018) of people, INTPs 3.3% and 4.5%.
You can sit close to the line on the last letter, and then a test may give you either type on different days. Your confidence score on the Judging and Perceiving scale shows how close you are.
Usually well on ideas, since both value competence and debate. The friction tends to come from timing: the INTJ wants a decision, the INTP wants one more round of analysis.
What leads. INTJs lead with introverted intuition, a sense of where things are heading. INTPs lead with introverted thinking, a drive to make their internal model consistent.
