ENFJ means Extraverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Judging. What ENFJs are like, strengths and blind spots, how rare they are, and the work that tends to fit.
ENFJs see potential in people and rally groups towards it. ENFJs were 2.3% of Americans in the Myers-Briggs Company's 2018 sample, the 2nd rarest of the 16 types.
| Letter | Meaning | The other side |
|---|---|---|
| E: Extraversion | Energy comes from people and activity. They often think best out loud. | INFJ |
| N: Intuition | They notice patterns, meanings and where things are heading. | ESFJ |
| F: Feeling | They decide by values and the effect on the people involved. | ENTJ |
| J: Judging | They like plans, decisions and closure. | ENFP |
An ENFJ leads with extraverted feeling, a strong read on the emotions and needs of the people around them. It is backed by introverted intuition, a sense of where things, and people, could go. They are warm, persuasive and often end up leading without asking to.
How ENFJs process the world, in order
Extraverted feeling: Leads: tuning into what the group needs
Introverted intuition: Supports: a quiet sense of where things are heading
Sensing (direction varies): Third: the third process
Introverted thinking: Least developed: an inner model that has to be consistent
Order from the Myers & Briggs Foundation, which leaves the direction of the third process open.
Every strength on the left has a shadow on the right. Knowing the pair is more useful than knowing either half.
| Strength | Watch for |
|---|---|
| Inspiring and developing people | Taking responsibility for everyone's feelings |
| Reading a room | Neglecting your own needs |
| Persuasion with warmth | Pushing your picture of someone's potential too hard |
| Organising for a cause | Taking criticism of the group personally |

Type theory points ENFJs towards work that uses their leading process. Treat it as a starting point: the test's publisher says there have been no meaningful studies of type predicting job performance, and that using type to decide who gets a job is unethical (MBTI Facts).

Most people sit near the middle on at least one pair. If that's you, read the type one letter away.
