The CQ Team · 6 min read · Oct 16, 2026

INFJ means Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Judging. What INFJs are like, strengths and blind spots, how rare they are, and the work that tends to fit.

INFJs read patterns in people, hold firm values and work steadily towards a picture of how things should be. INFJs were 2.9% of Americans in the Myers-Briggs Company's 2018 sample, the 3rd rarest of the 16 types.

What are INFJs like?

An INFJ leads with introverted intuition, a quiet, often wordless sense of how a situation will unfold or what a person really means. It is backed by extraverted feeling, which tunes them to the mood of a room and to what other people need. INFJs tend to be private with strangers and intense with the few people they trust, and once they decide something is right they can be surprisingly stubborn about it.

How INFJs process the world, in order

Introverted intuition: Leads: a quiet sense of where things are heading

Extraverted feeling: Supports: tuning into what the group needs

Thinking (direction varies): Third: the third process

Extraverted sensing: Least developed: full attention to the here and now

Order from the Myers & Briggs Foundation, which leaves the direction of the third process open.

Strengths, and what to watch for

Every strength on the left has a shadow on the right. Knowing the pair is more useful than knowing either half.

What work tends to suit an INFJ?

Type theory points INFJs towards work that uses their leading process. Treat it as a starting point: the test's publisher says there have been no meaningful studies of type predicting job performance, and that using type to decide who gets a job is unethical (MBTI Facts).
