INTJ means Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging. What INTJs are like, strengths and blind spots, how rare they are, and the work that tends to fit.
INTJs build long-range plans in their heads and then organise the world to carry them out. INTJs were 3.1% of Americans in the Myers-Briggs Company's 2018 sample, number 12 of 16 from most common.
| Letter | Meaning | The other side |
|---|---|---|
| I: Introversion | Energy comes from the inner world. Time alone or with a few close people recharges them. | ENTJ |
| N: Intuition | They notice patterns, meanings and where things are heading. | ISTJ |
| T: Thinking | They decide by logic and consistency first. | INFJ |
| J: Judging | They like plans, decisions and closure. | INTP |
An INTJ leads with introverted intuition, a sense of where things are heading that often arrives before the evidence. It is backed by extraverted thinking, which turns that vision into systems, plans and measurable goals. INTJs tend to be independent, sceptical of any authority they haven't tested, and impatient with inefficiency.
How INTJs process the world, in order
Introverted intuition: Leads: a quiet sense of where things are heading
Extraverted thinking: Supports: organising the world to get results
Feeling (direction varies): Third: the third process
Extraverted sensing: Least developed: full attention to the here and now
Order from the Myers & Briggs Foundation, which leaves the direction of the third process open.
Every strength on the left has a shadow on the right. Knowing the pair is more useful than knowing either half.
| Strength | Watch for |
|---|---|
| Strategy and long-range planning | Dismissing ideas that don't fit the plan |
| High standards for your own work | Expecting everyone to meet them without saying so |
| Independence and self-direction | Not explaining the reasoning behind decisions |
| Seeing through weak arguments | Coming across as cold when you're only being precise |

Type theory points INTJs towards work that uses their leading process. Treat it as a starting point: the test's publisher says there have been no meaningful studies of type predicting job performance, and that using type to decide who gets a job is unethical (MBTI Facts).
