INTP Personality Type

The CQ Team · 6 min read · Oct 16, 2026

INTP means Introverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Perceiving. What INTPs are like, strengths and blind spots, how rare they are, and the work that tends to fit.

INTPs want to understand how everything works and keep questioning a model until it holds. INTPs were 4.5% of Americans in the Myers-Briggs Company's 2018 sample, number 11 of 16 from most common.

What are INTPs like?

An INTP leads with introverted thinking, a drive to make their internal model of the world consistent. It is backed by extraverted intuition, which throws up possibilities, connections and what-ifs. INTPs are often quiet in groups and intensely focused alone, especially on a problem nobody has solved.

How INTPs process the world, in order

Introverted thinking: Leads: an inner model that has to be consistent

Extraverted intuition: Supports: spotting possibilities and connections

Sensing (direction varies): Third: the third process

Extraverted feeling: Least developed: tuning into what the group needs

Order from the Myers & Briggs Foundation, which leaves the direction of the third process open.

Strengths, and what to watch for

Every strength on the left has a shadow on the right. Knowing the pair is more useful than knowing either half.

What work tends to suit an INTP?

Type theory points INTPs towards work that uses their leading process. Treat it as a starting point: the test's publisher says there have been no meaningful studies of type predicting job performance, and that using type to decide who gets a job is unethical (MBTI Facts).
