ISFJ Personality Type

The CQ Team · 6 min read · Oct 16, 2026

ISFJ means Introverted, Sensing, Feeling, Judging. What ISFJs are like, strengths and blind spots, how rare they are, and the work that tends to fit.

ISFJs look after people in practical ways, remember the details that matter to them and quietly keep things running. ISFJs were 10.6% of Americans in the Myers-Briggs Company's 2018 sample, the 2nd most common of the 16 types.

S: SensingThey trust concrete detail and experience over theory.INFJ
F: FeelingThey decide by values and the effect on the people involved.ISTJ
J: JudgingThey like plans, decisions and closure.ISFP

What are ISFJs like?

An ISFJ leads with introverted sensing, a rich memory for specifics, including what each person in their life likes and needs. It is backed by extraverted feeling, which points that memory at keeping people comfortable and the group in harmony. They are often the ones who notice someone is missing from the table.

How ISFJs process the world, in order

Introverted sensing: Leads: a detailed memory of what has worked

Extraverted feeling: Supports: tuning into what the group needs

Thinking (direction varies): Third: the third process

Extraverted intuition: Least developed: spotting possibilities and connections

Order from the Myers & Briggs Foundation, which leaves the direction of the third process open.

Strengths, and what to watch for

Every strength on the left has a shadow on the right. Knowing the pair is more useful than knowing either half.

What work tends to suit an ISFJ?

Type theory points ISFJs towards work that uses their leading process. Treat it as a starting point: the test's publisher says there have been no meaningful studies of type predicting job performance, and that using type to decide who gets a job is unethical (MBTI Facts).
